A Year in Review

As 2014 winds down, I thought it would be fun to look back over the year to see what some of the highlights were.  And looking back over the blog, there have been quite a few!!! { Click the highlighted areas to go back to the original blog post }

So, grab a cup of tea, settle in and let’s reflect on all the awesomeness that was 2014 over here at Farm Fresh.

Highlight #10

Everyone seems to enjoy a good Thrift Challenge!!  I threw this out there and I was so happy with the results!!  You guys found some great treasures and introduced me to places I hadn’t even heard of!!  I plan on doing a post about the awesome places we have around here to find this kind of wicked scores in the near future so the long gap between yard sale seasons doesn’t seem as endless.

Highlight #9

I’m am thankful to have such amazing people in my life that I get to call my friends.  And if we can throw a surprise party for the one and only Christine to kick off the wedding celebrations, all the better!!!

Shower

Highlight #8

I try to be a positive person and be thankful for the gifts in my life.  I truly enjoy Thanksgiving Day when we set aside the day to really focus on what we have – not just things but the people who make our lives richer.  My cup overflowth.

Highlight #7

My chickens.  Oh, how I love having chickens again.  And when they started to lay eggs – the excitement!!!  There are numerous posts over the past year about my darling buzzards, you can see pictures here, here and here.  They add so much to our lovely little farm.

Chick Love

Highlight #6

Years ago my sister and I would take annual camping trips together.  Fast forward a lot of years and four kids later, and things take place in a s lightly different manner.  Our first (but not our last!!) trip to the near by Pictou Island was EPIC!!!  I’m looking forward to doing it again this summer – maybe longer, somehow – camping??

Pictou Island

Highlight #5

We celebrate my Dad’s health and are thankful to have him still with us.  But it was hard to write about why we do.  Hug your loved ones and be thankful for each day you get to spend together.  Life is precious.  Don’t take it for granted.

Highlight #4

A huge change for me personally this past year was when I made the leap and left my job at a local decorating shop.  It’s been fun, interesting and challenging and I don’t regret it one little bit.  Running my own business, being home so much more with my girls and taking different opportunities that have come my way has been worth it.

Highlight #3

With making the leap into owning my own business, I needed a better blog platform and thus we are visiting here together at www.farmfreshstyle.ca and not my old blog platform over at Blogspot.  This was an exciting change and one that took hours {Thanks, Christine!!! } and I love it over here!!! I hope you like it here, too!

Highlight #2

The family reunion that was held here this summer was….so amazing.  I miss my cousins and their families in a way I never did before.  The bonds that were established over the weekend are special and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to get to know my family better.  I was especially thankful for the extra day I got to spend with my cousin, Calvin and Erin, and their girls, exploring the East Coast.

Cousins

Highlight #1

Of course, the biggest highlight of the year was buying the house next door and moving over here to Clear Day Farm.  We have come home.  We painted, scrubbed, shuffled things around and settled into our new home.  The bonus, for me, was the studio space that I now run Farm Fresh out of.  And the barn, and the orchard, and the big yard, and the garden, and and and ALL the wonderful things over here, on the other side of the road.  I’m thankful that this move was possible without uprooting the girls from their school and preschool and staying close to our families.

Clear Day Farm

2014 was a big year for me.  Lots of change, lots of exciting things happening.  I knew it was the year of change and I prepared for it the best I could.  2015 will be about settling into new routines and bringing my business further.

I wouldn’t have been able to make these changes without the continued support of the handsome Mr. Byrne, my sweet girlies and my family.  Thank you for believing in what I’m doing!!  And a huge shout out to you, my readers, for your support and for continuely dropping over to see what’s going on over here.  Thank you!!

I can hardly wait to see what 2015 will bring!! {It’ll start by ringing in the New Year with the newly weds while the girls have a sleepover with grandparents!! Wahoo for that!! }

Happy New Year!!!

Random Christmas Re-cap

Christmas 2014 (4)

Another Christmas season has come and gone.  What a whirl wind!!!  We spent lots of time with family, ate way too much everyday and got spoiled rotten.  The grandkids re-enacted the Nativity for us while Opa read and treated us to ‘Away in a Manger’.  We went for a walk to the beach in +14 degree weather.  We did a puzzle.  We ate too much.  I feel like I picked up in the living room every five minutes.  Hannah took her sweet time opening her gifts, she had some left under the tree on Boxing Day yet!  Too funny, that girl – she does it every year!

Christmas 2014

I can see this is turning into a random post….just a bunch of things jammed into one post.  Things I think you should know but might not necessarily deserve a full post themselves.  Sigh….I’m tired and can’t really pull a full thought together.

Every year I tell myself that I am not going to be running around right before Christmas delivering gifts and cards.  And again this year, the day before Christmas I was running around delivering gifts and cards.  I was also delivering some awesome secret projects I’ve been working on in the studio!  I’m excited to be able to share what some of those projects were now that they have been gifted!

Christmas 2014 (5)

My parents gifted all of us a trip to Pier 21 in Halifax.  What a wonderful, thoughtful gift.  Both of them arrived in Canada there and I know it will be an emotional day.  I was outside the building with my cousin and his family this summer and even that was emotional for me!!  I’ll be a basket case the day we all go as a family!!  They also gave us a chocolate letter like they do every year.  This year I got an ‘L’…..:)  We don’t always get the right letter, just depends on what’s left at the store the day Mom shops.

This year the weather was great if you wanted to travel or run but not so much if you wanted to snowshoe.  And I love to get out with friends and family over the holiday break to snowshoe.  I did manage to get out for a few runs on the mountain.  I’m hoping to get out regularly and work off some of the extra eating I’ve been doing. I think I mentioned I ate too much?

Christmas 2014 (2)

I bought a few ornaments on clearance today.  A few more wooden snowflakes, a canoe, a moose and an outhouse.  Every tree needs an outhouse, right?  I figured it ties in with the rustic, woodland thing I’ve got going on!  We were also given a whole family of owls this year, too.  They look great on the tree, along with all my new gnomes.  I’m going to hate to have to take our tree down.  The living room always feels so bare and empty after the decorations come down.  Maybe I’ll finally hang the curtains.  Maybe I’ll even go really crazy and paint the hallway!!!

Christmas 2014 (3)

When do you take down Christmas?  Do you want until after the New Year?  Do you pack it up on Boxing Day?  I like to leave it, especially since I’m usually pretty late in getting it all put up!  There are still a few things I planned on doing for decorations this year that I haven’t quite gotten to yet!

Gnome Sweet Gnome

Tree

There’s a fire in the stove, the Christmas tree is decorated, my family is all tucked snug in their beds.  The lights are dim, it’s quiet and the house is clean.  I feel like I can take a deep breathe, let it out and relax now.  Are the presents wrapped? No.  Cards mailed? No.  Groceries bought? No.  Orders delivered? No.  Does it matter?  Tonight, not at all.  I have a full heart, and everyone is under one roof and that all that matters today.

Hannah is sick again, though, we had an unexpected trip to see our favourite family doctor to tell us wheat we already knew, her ear infection was back.  But her cheer is good, we had some awesome snuggles and I discovered I can no longer carry her around.  Poor thing!!  I feel so bad for her and I practically have to pin her down to get her to take the horrid medicine.

But, tonight, I’m not here to talk about that. I’m here to tell a story.  A story that I’m not even sure how it started, all I know is that it continues on today.  This is the story of two friends and a shared love of garden gnomes.  Someone hid a gnome in a garden, probably Catherine hid it in mine.  Not even sure how many years ago.  But these gnomes keep appearing with very little fanfare.

Catherine had been questioning me as to when I might be home or when I might be gone.  I’m not too surprised by this, she is very generous, crafty and secretive.  These are a few things that make her an awesome friend to have.  { She also makes a good cup of coffee and knows her way around Halifax…just sayin’ } Today she showed up, gift bag in hand.  She had dropped very few hints and my one guess was wrong.  I opened the gift to discover a super cute little homemade gnome, like what you’d expect to see in a Swedish home all decked out for Christmas.  I thought the gift ended there.  We chatted, I showed them some secret projects happening in the Studio and they left.

Gnome

Fast forward to a few hours.  I get a text.  It’s Catherine.  She asks if I found it yet.  I had to ask her what it was I was looking for, you know how it is with Momma Brain.  All she said was I would know it when I found it.  You know I had to look!  But I found it, or what I thought was it, and I didn’t even have to get off my chair.  I was sitting beside the tree and immediately spotted a gnome in my tree!!  But, alas, there were five more!!!  Super cute blown glass gnomes!!  They look fabulous tucked in my tree.

Gnome (2)gnome (3)

The best part?  That I have a friend who values me enough to drive all the way out here so she could hide some gnomes in my tree.  Now that’s a good friend!

Christmas Trees & Concerts

Wow – has it really been that long since I blogged!?!?!  Oh my!!  Christmas will be here and gone before I know it!  Let me fill you in on the progress over here and you can all tell me that you’ve had all this stuff done for weeks! No? You are still shopping, decorating and still have to mail cards, just like me?  Awesome!  I knew I liked you!!

We had two Christmas concerts in the family again this year.  Lena had her school concert and I was so super proud of her!  She has joined the school choir which meant she was on stage a lot this year.  If you know my Lena – this is something!!  She did so well  – makes me teary to even think about it!  And her dress….reminds me of a certain wedding dress from this year….. It was fun to hear her practising her songs around the house, in the car, or with her pretend class in her bedroom.  I’m proud of her for stepping out of her normal and committing to this.  Sure makes this mom proud!

IMG_9208IMG_9231

Hannah lost her first tooth at Lena’s Christmas concert, too, which added some excitement while we waited for the concert to start!  Mrs. Hardie, a retired Primary teacher and notorious tooth-puller, offered to wiggle it for Hannah and then pull it and Hannah went for it!  She was hilarious, proudly showing everyone the new hole, even people she didn’t really know!  She was so brave!!

Hannah had her concert for preschool where she played the roles of both Mrs. Claus and Mary, as she is the only girl this year!  All those boys!!  But she had a blast!  And they all are so funny up on stage – some know the words and belt them out, some don’t and it doesn’t seem to bother them either way!  They also always do a gift exchange with their friends of gently loved toys, too.  That always gets interesting, too! { No pictures of that – too blurry!! Those kids move fast! }

We also went with my sister’s family to get our tree.  We did last year, too, (you can read about it here) and loved it so much that we did the exact same thing again – we start at Sugar Moon Farm { a family favourite, for sure! } and once properly fueled, headed up to Spiddle Hill to search for the perfect tree.  Thankfully, the weather was much better than last year!  It didn’t take us long, I look for a lean tree with just the right amount of height!  It doesn’t have to be perfectly even or full but it has to catch my eye!!

IMG_9295IMG_9315IMG_9306IMG_9336IMG_9324IMG_9319It is currently in a state of undress.  It’s in the stand, it has lights on it….but that’s it!!  I did buy some pretty burlap garland for it today so once I get that on and the ornaments sorted, then I’ll let the girls go at it!!  They’ve been asking if I decorated it yet, they really, really want to do it again this year!  I will give them a selection of ornaments this year, I feel the urge to have a theme.  Woodland, of course!  Makes up for not having the antler tree that one of my children requested….

Christmas pictures are taken, cards are bought…..now to make the two of those things come together and end up in mailboxes….

More Decorating Done

Well, I would love to report that the house is looking very festive and all the decorating is done.  But, I can’t.  So, I won’t.  I think we have made a little more progress, though. So, anything that gets us closer to the end goal is good!

IMG_9204

The day that Catherine was suppose to come, she couldn’t so we did it the next day and had a blast.  We did a little work and then decided we needed to go for a drive to look for some…..stuff.  The stuff we found included red berries, my sap bucket, pine boughs, a bird’s nest, a weird cocoon thingie, red branches and a very wet dog.  I’m sure if people saw us (and I don’t think anyone did because…well, it’s rural out here) they would have thought we were hunting or whacked.  We were in and out of ditches, clipping things and driving very slowly!! It was so much fun to hang out and even accomplish something.  Sometimes you need to just meander with your friend.  She also made me a beautiful wreath!  I’ll post pictures when it’s in its new home!

IMG_9262

Today, I finally got back outside to do more work to the outside decorations.  It was a perfect day for it!  So warm that the girls just had on sweatshirts while they were riding bikes and playing soccer.  I also had the help of the chickens.  Which, really, were no help at all.  They just wanted to eat the red berries we hunted so long for.  I’m not sure how many times I had to chase them off the front porch. But aren’t they pretty?? I am rather fond of my buzzards.

IMG_9270

Tomorrow we get our tree.  That’ll be a fun trip with my sister and her crew.  We’ll start with breakfast at Sugar Moon, a great way to start any day!  Once the tree is up, it’ll feel more like Christmas is coming (and rather quickly, too!!!)  I don’t even want to talk about how the shopping is going.  And wrapping hasn’t even been on my radar.  I do damage control wrapping….which is quickly wrapping the gift as you are about to leave to deliver it.  I’d love to be the type of person who has a wonderful wrapping station set up and does everything up so prettily and detailed. Maybe some day….but certainly not today, and probably not tomorrow either.
